It had been several years since CTE teachers had an opportunity to sit down with the Guidance Counselors and share about their programs of study. Dr. Shadden felt that it was an important time to restore this practice as there had been many recent changes to the department. He tasked me with creating schedule that would allow teachers around 15-20 mins to present and field questions that counselors might have about their program. These meetings would take place during their planning periods, and the meetings would need accommodate the counselors schedule as well.
I created a schedule and shared it with the staff and counselors. I also made sure that any updates were clearly marked on the schedule and re-shared as needed. Additionally, Dr. Shadden and I shared information about the expectations for this meeting during one of the SSQI Workshops preceding the meetings.
We have an increasing number of students that are taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment grants available to pay for early access to college credits. I worked with Ms. Wolfe our Career Counselor to find classrooms that students could work in while they took their Dual Enrollment course. With close to 180 students this proved to be a logistical problem that required navigating teacher and student schedules. The goal was to pair a student with a high school teacher that could provide support and mentorship as the student took on the challenge of a Dual Enrollment course.
In addition to their coursework for the college or university, students were challenged to complete Industry Certifications in the gap weeks between the start of the high school and dual enrollment schedule. Often they had two to three weeks before the courses began to spend preparing for a certification.
I developed a Canvas course to help our Teaching as a Profession students navigate this process and prepare for the ParaPro Certification. The course was intended to provide some additional advice for being successful in a Dual Enrollment course, and it will hopefully be a template that can be replicated for other courses offered at DB.

CTE education has shifted more towards systems thinking over the last couple of decades, and career pathways are a major product of that shift. I was tasked with developing marketing material for the Career Pathways available in Kingsport City Schools. I coordinated with Dr. Moorhouse, Dr. Cinnamon, and Dr. Shadden to put together a preliminary document that included the three focus industries for the district: Advanced Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Health Care. While the project never came fully to fruition, it was an important learning experience for me as to how the district leaders think and what priorities they have in mind.
Fall 2020
STARR Commonwealth offered a free professional development course in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Course focused on developing Trauma-Informed Resilient Schools, which is certainly needed in 2020.
I signed up for the course which included a series of videos and a test. Some of the background information was already familiar, but the application of it in a school setting was fairly new to me. This training helped me see that there are ways we can change the system to better respond to students who experience trauma.
As a leader, developing a Trauma-Informed Resilient School would be a top priority even under normal circumstance, but especially during this pandemic. This will be something I continue to learn more about and make a priority to advocate for.

Ms. Alesia Dinsmore has built an amazing culture at Rock Springs Elementary. I worked at Rock Springs prior to her starting a principal there, and it was an excellent school at that time. However, the school I saw while I shadowed Ms. Dinsmore was completely transformed. Ms. Dinsmore has a gift for building culture, and I learn many things as I observed her working with students and teachers alike.
Fall 2019 - Spring 2020
Dr. Jeff Moorhouse, the director of Kingsport City Schools, asked me to work on an extension of district initiative called Portrait of a Graduate. I met with Dr. Moorhouse, and he explained his vision of a system where student could receive recognition for embodying the five characteristics promoted by PoG.
I created a pilot program that would allow students to document evidence of how they exemplified Critical Thinking, Integrity, Empathy, Perseverance, and Adaptability. Upon completing their portfolio of work they would receive a digital badge that would also be reflected on their transcript.
This project is still under development, but like most things in 2020 it had to be put on the back burner due to the pandemic. I hope to continue working with Dr. Moorhouse and the leadership team to implement the badging system in the future.
